Coate Hall Information

Coate Hall is one of our two all freshman first year experience coed residence halls (Laux is the second). As a first year experience hall, special academic and programmatic services are offered to meet the unique needs of freshman. Leadership positions in the Coate Neighborhood Council (hall government) are available for any students interested in the beginning of the year. There will be many opportunities for first year students to get involved and get acclimated to their new "home away from home".

Coate houses about 400 students. It is a four-story; three cubed building located on the west most side of campus right off of La Crosse Street. Each cube is host to all males or females respectively, with a total of 3 male cubes and 9 female cubes to total out 12 cubes in the hall. The cubes consist of community style bathrooms and have between 12 and 16 rooms.

The majority of the student rooms in Coate Hall are double-occupancy, however each cube also plays host to anywhere from 1 to 3 triple rooms where 3 occupants live. Most double occupancy student rooms are the same size with room dimensions: 15'6" long x 11'6" wide x 8' high. Triple rooms are approximately 20' long x 10'8" wide. This can vary on location in the building. Included in each room are two desks, dressers, beds, mini-fridge, bookshelves, cable cord, recycling bag, trash bin, and recycling bin.

In addition to student rooms, Coate Hall has general use spaces for residents to use. These spaces include a TV lounge area, game room, group study, Sauna, computer lab, quiet study, and coffee house with piano. Each floor also has a study in between each cube which also provides a great deal of lounge/study space. Outside of Coate we have a sand volleyball pit, a basketball court, lots of bike racks and a large green space known as Coate Field which can be used for a pick-up game of soccer, football or Frisbee!

In addition to these special amenities, Coate Hall also is host to an Academic Advisor who works partial hours in the building to assist undecided major residents. Coate Hall also has an Academic Resource Team comprised of returning students called the PREP Team. These students work along with the Academic Advisor to assist and educate the first year students about good study habits. They are here to help in any way possible to make this first year transition to college an easy one. There is an additional minimal charge assessed to students living in this unique environment to fund these services.

Other amenities include high speed internet, cable television hookups, local phone service, on-site laundry facilities, and wireless internet throughout the hall.

Coate Hall offers many resources at the Front Desk. Residents can check-out equipment, kitchen supplies, movies, and various other items. Residents can also buy pizzas, stamps and other items by season.

Coate Hall is open during the academic year. Coate is closed for Thanksgiving and Spring breaks. Coate Hall will also be closed at the beginning of Winter Break until the J-term period begins, at which time students can occupy the hall for additional fees.
