Hutchison Hall (affectionately known as "Hutch") first opened in September of 1967 and is named after Miss Bessie Bell Hutchison, an English instructor from 1909-1935; one of the original 19 staff members of the university. Hutch's residents were all women then, known as Hutch's Honeys until 1980 when Hutch became co-ed and welcomed Hutch's Hunks. Today Hutch is a four-story residence hall housing 382 women and men. Along with an involved community and hall spirit, Hutch has had a strong tradition of academic excellence in recent years posting the highest GPA among the residents halls. A and C cubes are female cubes. B cube is a male cube, with the exception of the second floor B cube which is also female. Community style bathrooms can be found in each cube.
Most student rooms are double occupancy with room dimensions 15'6" long x 11'6" wide x 8' high. Hutch Hall has 1 to 3 triple rooms per cube also available to students. This can vary on location in the building. Included in each room are two desks, dressers, beds, mini-fridge, bookshelves, cable cord, recycling bag, trash bin, and recycling bin.
In addition to student rooms, Hutch Hall has general use spaces for residents to use. There is a TV lounge area, game room, exercise room, group study, computer lab, and diversity center/quiet study area. Also, on the second, third, and forth floors there are two additional studies located between the cubes; first floor has one additional study between B and C cubes. Hutch also is surrounded by two volleyball courts, a basketball court and within close proximity of UW-Ls main dining center, Rec Center, Library and the Center for the Arts; all of which make Hutch a desirable place to live.
