What kind of computer should I get?

While we do not recommend one brand of computer over another, UWL has created some suggestions for you to follow when purchasing a new computer for use at UWL. The recommendations are listed in the right column of this page.

Where can I get software?

Some great deals for students are available at http://www.wisc.edu/wisc. Log into this site with your 8.4 username and password to view thier list of products at discounted prices.

UWL also offers a free version of Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition to students. Log in with "eagle\" and your 8.4 username, then your email password. For example, if your 8.4 username is smith.john, your username would be "eagle\smith.john". This download of Symantec Anti-Virus only works in Internet Explorer, so do NOT try to use Mozilla, Safari, Opera, Chrome, or any other browser.

What can I do to get my computer ready for UWL?

A few days before coming to campus, make sure you have an accepted anti-virus solution installed and updated on your computer. Visit this page to see if your anti-virus is acceptable.

If you do not have an accepted anti-virus solution, download Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition. This is provided free of charge through the University and is only for student use.

After verifying that you have an anti-virus solution installed and updated, make sure your computer itself is up to date. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check for updates for your computer.

If you are a new student and have picked up a CD from ITS Support Center during Freshman Registration, use it to install the Cisco Clean Access Agent. If you do not have this CD, don't worry. You can install CCA when you arrive on campus.

How do I use my University Email? or What is my password?

Full instructions on using your University Email account are listed here. This covers everybody from first time users to experienced students who want to learn how to get more out of their email account.

How do I set up wireless?

Visit this page for step by step instructions on wireless. Select your operating system and follow each step carefully to make sure your computer will be able to view the University's wireless network. To keep our network safe and secure, your computer will not even see the University's wireless network until all steps are completed.

How do I get my online gaming system set up?

If you have a gaming console and would like to use its online functionality, you will have to supply its MAC Address to ITS. Detailed instructions for major consoles can be found here.

Does UWL provide free file storage?

Each student has 200MB of free online file storage. This makes it possible to work on homework in your room, then go to the library and finish it without needing to email the document to yourself or carry a flash drive around campus. It can be used from any of the computer labs on campus or even from your personal computer. Instructions for setting up and accessing your personal files are listed here.
