History of Carol Bassuener Chapter
Our chapter was founded in 1978 as one of many student-run and supported organizations at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. It consists of 23 members, which represent the top 1% of our residence hall population. In November 1997, the NRHH members voted to officially name our chapter The Carol Bassuener Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. This name reflects and commemorates the dedication, enthusiasm, and energy that longtime advisor Carol Bassuener has given to our chapter. In May 1998, the chapter was selected as the national NRHH chapter of the year; and in November 2000, it was selected GLACURH regional NRHH chapter of the year.
History of NRHH
In 1964, the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH), Inc. found itself with financial difficulties. Jim Tschechtelin, NACURH Chair, began investigating possibilities for potential revenue sources and grants. Grants were found, but there were two requirements: a central NACURH office had to be established, and the member schools needed more services rendered. Thus, the National Residence Hall Honorary was put forth as an answer to the second requirement. During the preliminary organization, the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) focused on the incorporation of old into new. Campuses with existing honorary organizations were contacted and coordinated into the NRHH structure. The preservation of chapter identity was primary, as it was incorporated into the NRHH structure, and as each campus is aware of its own individual needs. The primary focus of each chapter became the recognition of the residence hall leaders on its campus. this helped sustain a consistent membership in on-campus organizations as well as on the regional and national levels within NACURH. The years between 1977 and 1987 were years of growth for the NRHH. Pins and certificates were produced to recognize the members of the Honorary, the tradition of regional and national receptions during conferences began and formal recruitment and affiliation packets were produced. Regional Recruiter (now called Associate Directors) positions on regional boards were also established. Many awards were established including Program, National Communications Coordinator, Advisor, Student, and Resident Assistant Of The Month Awards as well as Outstanding Chapter of the Year. Today, over 170 chapters are affiliated with the National Residence Hall Honorary National Office. Activities of the chapters vary from campus to campus. Some simply induct new members at an annual recognition banquet this year, thus, an honorary chapter. Others are extremely active on their campuses and in their communities, coordinating leadership retreats, conferences, socials, hall or campus wide programs, fund raisers, and a whole host of other events. Still others have found a middle ground which suits their campus. Membership selection is conducted by each individual chapter. The chapter members represent the top 1% of the student leaders on campus and are those who have contributed extraordinary amounts of personal time and energy in order to make the residence halls more than a "dorm."
The Four Pillars of NRHH
The National Residence Hall Honorary is dedicated to actively and enthusiastically upholding the four pillars of NRHH: leadership, academics, community service, and recognition.
Symbols of NRHH
The NRHH colors are blue and white. The blue symbolizes loyalty: loyalty to purpose and idea. The white signifies a blank page: a page on which a student writes the successes and experiences that fill their days in the residence halls.
The symbol for NRHH is that of a diamond surrounding the letters of the organization, and the three interconnected lines, the chain of leadership. The diamond, the world's most precious gem, signifies the value and beauty one finds in the residence halls experienceious gem, signifies the value and beauty one finds in the residence halls experience.
The first link of the chain represents caring. Leaders are people who care. They are concerned about themselves and others, and are committed to making things better. The second link signifies dedication. Part of a leader's commitment is the dedication to cause which they display. Dedication is an important part of the involvement required to be truly effective. The third link represents participation. True leaders participate fully in their academic pursuits, their friendships, their activities, and their lives. Leaders don't sit on the sidelines, but are competent team players. Together the unbroken chain symbolizes the membership of NRHH. As leaders we are interconnected as caring and dedicated participants in the community of your university.
NRHH Committees
These are the committees that were available in the UW-La Crosse NRHH Chapter during 2009-2010. Committees are revised every year.
Induction- Lead by Vice President Erica Perrin
This committee's goal is to induct members each semester in order to create a full NRHH chapter roster. In the fall semester this committee decides and plans everything that is needed to be done to have a successful induction ceremony. In the spring this committee also takes applications to fill the upcoming vacancies made by members who are moving off campus or graduating after the current academic year. This a very important committee to the NRHH chapter as it helps shape the future of the Carol Bassuener Chapter of NRHH.
OTM- Lead By OTM Coordinator Aaron Mittelstaedt
The OTM committee solicits and selects winning OTM's for our campus and sends them on for state, regional, and national recognition. OTM's or "Of The Months" are an excellent way to recognize people within the residence halls and on campus for outstanding contributions that have been made in the past month. All OTM submissions are done on-line. This committee also strives to make sure that all of those nominees who do not win an OTM are still acknowledged for the awesome job that they did for this campus. They plan an OTM Celebration at the end of the year to highlight all nominations.
Fundraising Committee- Lead by Fundraising & Loft Coordinator Erin Miller
This committee plans fund raising activities to provide money to assist halls with their programming efforts and to continue funding of the NRHH Award for its members.
Res Life Recognition- Lead by Secretary Kate Hansen
This committee recognizes and celebrates various groups within Residence Life. Typically a recognition day is designated to appreciate the group in some way and also something is purchased and given to them. Some of the groups recognized include staff, exec, desk assistants, pro staff, housekeepers many more.
Campus Recognition- Lead by NRHH/RHAC Liaison Kasey Inderdahl
This committee finds ways to provide recognition for different groups of people on campus that work very hard but might not always be recognized in the way that they deserve. This might include providing breakfast for different offices around campus or acknowledging various teams or faculty members.
Leadership and Community Service Committee- Lead by Treasurer Jon DeVries
This committee works hard to promote leadership development on campus through sponsoring workshops or programs for Hall Leadership teams/Staff/Exec teams. It also plans opportunities for NRHH to provide service to the campus and community.
Events Sponsored by NRHH in the 2008-2009 School Year
NRHH is responsible for organizing and facilitating the loft distribution here at UW-L. Every year NRHH also distributes the Campus Voice Posters that are located in the residence halls and many other areas on campus. NRHH sponsored various recognition days here on the UWL campus. Some of those days included but were not limited to: Student Staff Members, Desk Assistants, Administrative Assistants, Pros Staff Members, Housekeepers, Academic Resource Mentors, RLIS Members, residence hall residents, and Hall Execs. NRHH sponsored the Leadership from the Heart Workshop, presented at campus leadership workshops, assisted with Diversity Day at Onalaska High School, helped RHAC with the Mystery Dinner and Holiday Formal, did fund raising activities and other community service activities. In addition, NRHH has helped to fund numerous programs sponsored by individual residence halls. |
